Per CVD §17.12 cardinal numerical canon and T0\_Hard\_Lines HL\_0057 plus HL\_0058, the player familiar architecture is 22 slots total: 21 base slots corresponding to the 21 mortal legendary species (7 Water \+ 7 Ground \+ 7 Flying), plus 1 path-variable 22nd slot reserved for the protagonist's childhood familiar from the fairy realm.
THE SLOT CAP IS TWO-PHASE (Josh RULED 2026-07-30, the twenty-ninth sitting; docs/spine/DECISIONS\_PENDING\_JOSH.md is the authority). Twenty-two slots is the BASE-GAME cap and is unchanged: 21 base slots for the 21 mortal legendary species plus the 1 path-variable 22nd slot holding the childhood familiar from the fairy realm. At the POST-GAME EPILOGUE the cap rises to THIRTY-THREE, because the NG+ post-Epilogue fairy-realm revisit opens all twelve fairy-realm familiars to taming and each needs a slot to live in: 21 mortal plus 12 fairy-realm equals 33. The arithmetic was verified against this section and HL\_0058 before it was recorded rather than assumed — the childhood familiar is counted INSIDE the 22 as the path-variable 22nd, so the twelve fairy-realm species contribute one slot in the base game and twelve at the post-game Epilogue. The post-game cap therefore lands exactly on the 33-legendary-species roster of HL\_0057 (21 mortal plus 12 elven): at the post-game Epilogue, player slots equal canonical species. The 22 is never deleted and never superseded; it is the base-game truth, and the 33 is the post-game truth. Full post-game canon at §5.11.
Numerological alignment is deliberate and multi-layered. The 22 total aligns with the 22 paths of the Tree of Life (Thread 5 integration), the 22 Hebrew letters, and the 22 Tarot Major Arcana completing the Fool's journey archetype. The three 7-slot sub-rosters align with the seven vril-seats, the seven Inner Council sectors of House of Velheim per T4\_House\_of\_Velheim\_Canonical, and the seven vital energy devices per T1\_Vril\_and\_Magic\_System\_Master. The 22 number resonates with the 22 narrative threads (6 Major \+ 16 Minor) per T1\_Threads\_22\_Master\_References and the 22-bucket per-chapter quest aggregation.
Fairy-realm familiar architecture. The fairy realm hosts the 12 elven legendary familiar species per CVD §17.12 33-species roster (21 mortal \+ 12 elven \= 33 leg-tier total). The Ch 1 character creation moment presents these twelve species to the player; the chosen species becomes the protagonist's childhood familiar bond and occupies the path-variable 22nd slot. The familiar falls through the rift into the mortal world with the protagonist as the \+1 in the 21-plus-1 architecture. The remaining eleven species stay in the fairy realm under the Elven King's royal communion across his ten-thousand-year tenure per T3\_Core\_Characters Section 6\. The fairy realm and the mortal realm are separate dimensional spaces; the Elven King does not travel freely between them. The 21 mortal-world familiars are documented mortal-world species the protagonist bonds with across the 77-chapter journey, categorically distinct from the 12 fairy-realm-native species. The path-variable 22nd slot is the bridge between the two systems. Section 5 owns the path-variable 22nd slot full canon.
The player travels with three active familiars at any time — one Ground, one Flying, one Water — plus the path-variable 22nd slot operating outside the rotation when active. Familiar substitution within a slot carries unspoken consequences related to bond loyalty that the path-variable 22nd slot familiar perceives at Ch 58 reunion per Section 5\. If the player has never replaced their original familiar in a given slot, the 22nd slot familiar recognizes this at reunion.
Each familiar type carries elemental associations within its category. Familiars do not possess vril capabilities at initial bond; vril-integration develops as the player teaches and imbues the familiar through bonding and training. The vril-integration arc runs parallel to the protagonist's own vril-seat development per T1\_Vril\_and\_Magic\_System\_Master.
The 22 slots divide into two mechanical types.
Sustained-bond. A single familiar in the roster is sustained-bond — Shell (W1). Shell is a legacy type operating on pre-depletion frequency. Once bonded in Ch 02-03, Shell does not rotate out of the Water slot; she is present always when the Water slot is active. This is the mechanical exception that establishes Shell's narrative weight as the only familiar predating the vril depletion event.
Rotational. The remaining 21 familiars including the path-variable 22nd slot familiar are rotational. Each can occupy its respective slot, and the player moves between familiars based on regional availability, bond development, and tactical need. Rotational familiars retain their bond permanently once formed — rotation is slot occupation, not bond loss. Rotation does not reduce bond level; it only changes which familiar is actively traveling with the protagonist at any moment.
Per CVD §9.2 5-band integrity framework and T0\_Hard\_Lines HL\_0022, familiar combat behavior varies by integrity band.
L1 Truly Good (+60 to \+100) plus L2 Good Enough (+20 to \+59). The familiar cannot be used to attack until the familiar steps in voluntarily at 50% or less player health. The familiar removes itself from battle once the player's health recovers above 50%. The player cannot override this behavior on these bands — the familiar acts on its own judgment. The design tension is intentional: these players are protected in desperate moments but cannot weaponize the relationship. The familiar is a companion, not a tool.
L3 Drifting (-19 to \+19). Familiar behavior is intermediate — the familiar can be directed to attack but with a trust threshold that must be earned. The familiar will disengage if the player's requested action violates the familiar's species behavior canon.
L4 Evil (-59 to \-20) plus L5 Pure Evil terminal (-100 to \-60). The player can attack with their familiar from the beginning of battle. If the player has bonded sufficiently despite the path, the familiar steps in to protect at 50% or less health and will not run away or lose loyalty if it dies protecting the player. Low-bond familiars on these bands may run away if killed in battle.
Integrity-driven appearance shift per Pillar 12 Layer 3 fauna behavior substrate. L1 plus L2 familiars evolve aesthetic toward radiant light-aspected forms. L3 familiars retain balanced forms. L4 plus L5 familiars exhibit corrosive aesthetic shift toward shadow-aspected forms covering coat darkening, vocalization pattern shift, and predator-behavior intensification beyond species baseline. Aesthetic evolution is reversible along the integrity axis: a player moving from L4-L5 back to L1-L3 sees the visible corrosion recede. The path-variable 22nd slot familiar's integrity-read at Ch 58 accounts for the full integrity-history across 77 chapters; recovery from deep corrosion is visible to the 22nd slot familiar even where surface-state at Ch 58 is improved.
Every one of the 22 named familiars carries a bond quest structured on five canonical elements.
Approach mechanic. The specific species behavior that signals the animal is ready for approach, drawn from species behavior canon. No bond requires human-projected action. Examples: Kira requires sustained dawn-stillness across multiple mornings (bird-watching patience protocol); Khan requires tracking-without-detection for canonical distance (tiger-acceptance-of-fellow-apex-presence); Muthu requires mahout vocalization-positioning-approach sequence; Simurgh requires completion of the Conference of the Birds Seven Valleys questline.
Acceptance signal. What the animal does when it accepts the bond, drawn from species behavioral repertoire. Examples: Kira lands on protagonist's outstretched arm without hesitation; Khan permits protagonist to approach kill and share meat (pack-acceptance indicator); Octopus briefly envelops protagonist's arm (cross-species investigation gesture); Kasa permits protagonist to help release hatchlings (shared-ritual participation).
First shared ability. What the protagonist immediately gains from the bond, species-appropriate to the familiar. Examples: Shell grants shared underwater breathing; Kira grants elevated aerial perception; Khan grants apex predator presence reducing hostile wildlife aggression; Octopus grants underwater camouflage.
Long-term ability. What develops through sustained bond at maximum development. Always culminates in a Mastery summon-ultimate that expresses the familiar's species peak-behavior in its cultural-mythological register.
Narrative arc. What the familiar adds to the protagonist's emotional arc. Always thematic, never incidental. Shell represents ancient-patience and pre-depletion consciousness; Khan represents island-evolution apex-consciousness; Muthu represents species-memory; Paravani represents consciousness overcoming base nature (kundalini-rising iconography); Simurgh represents the philosophical climax of the familiar system (has understood the Grand Sage revelation for millennia); the path-variable 22nd slot familiar represents loss understood as ongoing survival rather than absence.
Every familiar's ability set develops across five bond levels mapped to the 12-tier Hermetic mastery framework per CVD §12.1. Bond formation occurs at Neophyte tier (numerical 1-9). Bond 25 corresponds to Zelator tier mid-range (numerical 10-29). Bond 50 corresponds to Theoricus tier mid-range (numerical 30-49). Bond 75 corresponds to Practicus tier mid-range (numerical 50-69). Bond 100 / Mastery corresponds to Philosophus completion (numerical 99\) plus access to the Adeptus Minor substrate-perception threshold (numerical 100).
Bond formation. A single shared ability reflecting the species's signature capacity (Shell's shared underwater breathing; Kira's elevated aerial perception).
Bond 25\. First extended ability (Kira's aerial tag marking specific locations; Khan's silent stalking).
Bond 50\. Mid-tier ability typically involving environmental perception or tactical awareness (Shell's ancient memory access; Octopus's puzzle-solving assistance; Desta's pack-coordination tactical awareness).
Bond 75\. Advanced ability extending the familiar's capacity to regional or network scale (Kira's alarm call network with other Balinese bird species; Khan's infectious strike; Paravani's alarm-call network with other Indian wildlife species; Msafiri's territorial call coordinating raptor reconnaissance).
Bond 100 / Mastery. Summon-ultimate that activates the familiar's species peak-behavior in its cultural-mythological register. Examples: Kira's murmuration of starlings across combat space; Shell's sustained presence amplifying party vril capacity by 150 percent; Paravani's Kartikeya peacock iconographic activation with 1000-eyespot precision strikes; Muthu's ceremonial elephant parade formation.
Familiar bond development is one of the canonical mastery tracks reaching prestige tiers per CVD §12.1. Deep-bond players reach Adeptus Major (numerical 101-150) plus Adeptus Exemptus (numerical 151-199) on the bond track. Magister Templi (numerical 200\) on the familiar bond track unlocks via the post-Ch-77 prestige questline. Magus (Tier C MMO endgame only) extends bond canon across Tier C scope per T1\_Tier\_C\_MMO\_Spec.
The familiar system extends beyond bond-and-battle mechanics into the Familiar Garden system. The system draws on Chao Garden depth plus Pokémon species-collection completeness.
Individual stats per familiar scale 1-99 per stat covering six stats: Strength (melee capability); Flight, Swim, or Speed (locomotion, slot-dependent); Perception (vril sight contribution); Endurance (operational duration); Bond (relationship depth); Specialty (slot-specific unique stat per familiar).
Evolution mechanics. Familiars evolve based on care, feeding, experience, and player integrity. L1 plus L2 familiars evolve toward radiant light-aspected forms; L4 plus L5 familiars evolve toward shadow-aspected forms; L3 familiars retain balanced forms. Specific species-canonical evolution arcs apply to three familiars in the roster: Koi → Dragon at max bond plus Magister Templi Animal Communication; Sea Turtle → Cosmic Turtle (planetary scale) at max bond plus specific questline; Raven → Huginn-Muninn pair evolution (becomes two familiars).
Familiar Kindergarten (training mode). Dedicated spaces in each trade compound where familiars train passively. Training mini-games per stat (strength, flight, swim, speed, perception, endurance). Training multipliers during player offline hours (Tier C MMO feature).
Familiar Tournaments (Tier C MMO endgame). Racing circuits per region (Chao Race model). Combat tournaments with familiar-vs-familiar battles. Karate-style skill tournaments. Familiar-lineage and cross-lineage tournament breeding remain Tier C only per T1\_Tier\_C\_MMO\_Spec (a superset over the L1 husbandry loop below). Legendary familiar cross-realm hunts.
Breeding — the L1 husbandry loop. Monster breeding is an L1 everyone-plays single-player husbandry system operating on the 400-plus ordinary tameable roster owned by T3\_Creatures\_Tameable, not on the 22 named familiars. The firewall is load-bearing and absolute: bred offspring are always ordinary-tier — never a legendary-tier species, never a 22-slot familiar occupant, never a canonical evolution. The 33 legendary-tier species (21 mortal plus 12 elven), the 22 player familiar slots including the path-variable 22nd, and the three species-canonical familiar evolutions (Koi to Dragon, Sea Turtle to Cosmic Turtle, Raven to Huginn-Muninn) are never breeding outputs and are untouched by the husbandry loop per CVD §17.12 and T0\_Hard\_Lines HL\_0057 plus HL\_0058. A bonded legendary familiar may sire or dam an ordinary prestige-line — an ordinary-tier offspring carrying a flavor lineage name and a minor trait-halo — but that offspring is never itself legendary and never occupies a familiar slot. The husbandry loop reuses the Familiar Garden six-stat scale under RNG\_Sigma bell-curve discipline per CVD §17.13 (generational gains sigma-bounded as built-in anti-power-creep), integrity-coupled aesthetics, and Trade 1 Animal Communication mastery gating; basic husbandry roots in early trade-compound pens, advanced husbandry in the Tier-6 Crown Dimension Pocket. Numerical husbandry parameters are pending authorial assignment.
The Beastiary (Pokédex equivalent). Catalogs all 22 familiars encountered plus the 400-plus non-familiar tameable creature species across the world per T3\_Creatures\_Tameable scope. Each entry documents cultural significance, behavioral notes, habitat, ecological role. Rare variant encounters (shiny equivalent) operate under T1\_RNG\_Sigma\_Constraint\_System discipline per CVD §17.13 — variant spawn rates bound to plus-or-minus 1 sigma of the canonical bell curve. Completionist tier requires documenting every variant in the Beastiary. Section 8 cross-references T3\_Creatures\_Tameable for non-named-familiar fauna.
Bonding develops through raising, petting, feeding, and playing. Familiars observe the player's battles and cast occasional environmental buffs or effects even when not the active familiar. A sufficiently-bonded familiar that survives develops independently — abilities improve, personality traits emerge, the familiar begins anticipating the player's needs rather than simply responding.
Abandonment. An abandoned familiar follows the player for a period of time, visibly distressed. The game does not explain the consequences of abandonment; they emerge through play. Abandonment carries permanent consequences that the path-variable 22nd slot familiar perceives at Ch 58 reunion. The game does not telegraph these consequences; they surface as behavioral shifts in the 22nd slot familiar's recognition depth.
Animal Communication Mastery requires a vegan diet and high integrity per T1\_Trades\_Master Trade 1 canon. Mastery cannot be achieved on L4 Evil or L5 Pure Evil paths. Without Animal Communication Mastery, the path-variable 22nd slot familiar encountered at Ch 58 on Truly Good path will not imbue energy into the player's other familiars — the full vril-sharing power-up reaching pre-fairy-realm-atmospheric regeneration level is Animal Communication Mastery gated.
Some factions are hostile to vegans. Safe havens exist for vegan players within hostile faction territories. The Item Rift ability can swap meat for a vegan dish in specific social situations. The constraint is canonically real per CVD canon: the game acknowledges the player cannot achieve perfect across all canonical aspects simultaneously. This is Humanity.
Animal Communication operates under Trickery influence as well. Smarter, more-developed animals will not be fooled by Trickery alone — genuine communication with high-level familiar candidates (Simurgh, Muthu post-Bond-75, the path-variable 22nd slot familiar at reunion) requires both high integrity and high Trickery. Low-Trickery plus high-integrity players can form bonds with simpler or more directly-trusting familiars but are gated from the deepest animal communication content.
Species. Flores Giant Softshell Turtle (*Chitra chitra javanensis* regional population). Critically endangered species. Ancient lineage predating human civilization by millions of years. Recognized in Manggarai tradition as a bearer of ancestral memory.
Region. Flores Island Ch 02-03.
Cultural substrate. Manggarai ancestral-memory turtle tradition. Cross-Austronesian softshell-turtle sacred-tradition substrate per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence.
Appearance. Approximately 0.8 meters length. Flat soft-edged carapace. Long pointed snout. Amber eyes that appear to contain layers of depth. Swift in water. Deliberately patient on land.
Personality. She does not rush. Does not panic. Has outlived dozens of threats. Treats the child with the patience of someone for whom time works differently.
Mechanical type. Sustained-bond Water familiar. The only sustained-bond familiar in the 22-slot architecture. Legacy type operating on pre-depletion frequency. Once bonded, Shell is present always when the Water slot is active. This mechanical exception establishes Shell's narrative weight as the only familiar predating the vril depletion event.
Bond quest approach mechanic. The healer-elder Mama Klara (Ch 03\) provides the approach protocol per T3\_Supporting\_Characters: a specific offering at the water source, stillness across a specified duration, allowing Shell to approach. Shell decides.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Shell emerges from the water source and permits the protagonist to remain within her personal-space threshold without retreating. Softshell turtle acceptance behavior canonical.
Abilities.
Evolution status. Shell does not evolve in the species-transformation sense (unlike Koi → Dragon or Sea Turtle → Cosmic Turtle). Shell is ancient — she was complete before the depletion. Her arc is revelation rather than transformation.
Narrative arc. Shell represents the ancient world that preceded the depletion — what consciousness was before the negative consciousness arrived. She is the player's anchor across every region; she remembers everything. At Ch 58 Antarctica on Truly Good path, Shell and the path-variable 22nd slot familiar recognize each other — they have always known.
Cross-chapter canonical peak deployments. Shell appears across all 77 chapters via sustained-bond mechanic. Canonical peak moments lock at four specific beats per T1\_Story\_Spine integration.
Thread anchors. Thread 1 Vril Parallels (pre-depletion frequency anchor). Thread 6 Dying-Rising (ancient-lineage-survival archetype).
Species. *Crocodylus niloticus* (Nile crocodile) of the Nile ecosystem. Egyptian sacred tradition substrate.
Region. Egypt Ch 15\. Placement locked Ch 15 Egypt per Sobek-deity primary cultural anchor (flexibility between Ch 10 Rift Valley and Ch 15 Egypt resolved Ch 15 per Phase 5 cascade decision).
Cultural substrate. Sobek cult tradition. Cross-cultural sacred-crocodile tradition substrate covering Egyptian Sobek and African parallel traditions.
Appearance. Approximately 4-5 meters length (adult Nile crocodile range). Armor-plated osteoderms across back and tail. Powerful jaws with 70-plus conical teeth. Yellow-olive coloration. Eyes, nostrils, and ears positioned for surface-breathing while submerged.
Personality. Deliberate. Unhurried. Ambush-specialist patience; the species-canonical hours-motionless hunting tradition. Treats the protagonist with apex-predator assessment — not as prey, not as kin, but as a fellow entity with vril signature worth observing. Sobek-cult tradition represents the divine-crocodile lineage; the familiar experiences this heritage.
Mechanical type. Rotational Water familiar. High-armor type. Rotates with Shell (sustained-bond always-present Water slot anchor) plus other rotational Water familiars (Octopus W4, Kasa W5, Koi W3, Boto W6, Bowhead W7).
Bond quest approach mechanic. Kom Ombo plus Faiyum Sobek-temple tradition, gate-kept by Sobek Crocodile-Cult Priestess Nehemet-Awai per T3\_Supporting\_Characters. Patient approach at the sacred pool across multiple days plus offering (Sobek-cult traditional food offering) plus stillness during sacred-crocodile feeding ritual plus integrity threshold maintained across the approach sequence. Shell sustained-bond does not interfere (parallel bond types).
Bond quest acceptance signal. The Nile Crocodile briefly surfaces beside the protagonist at pool edge, holds eye contact for an extended duration (predator-assessment-complete signal per Nehemet-Awai's tradition).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Nile Crocodile represents apex-predator-integrated-into-divine-tradition. The civilization that made Sobek sacred recognized something about crocodile-consciousness that non-Sobek cultures missed. The bond grants the protagonist cross-cultural perspective on predator-tradition. Philosophical complement to Shell (ancient-patience), Kasa (planetary-navigation), and Octopus (distributed-intelligence).
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Water familiar. Reappears at Ch 38 Azores (Nile-to-Atlantic biological impossibility acknowledged; familiar-bond persists via Vimana travel mechanic) plus Ch 69 the Duat (the final-arc fairy-realm threshold).
Thread anchors. Thread 2 Serpent (crocodile-as-serpent-adjacent sacred tradition). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (Ka/Ba/Akh framework integration at Ch 15 vril peak).
Species. Koi / Sacred Carp. Koi-to-Dragon transformation mythology canonical in Chinese tradition; Japanese cultural parallel.
Region. Ch 21 China.
Cultural substrate. Chinese Koi-Dragon Gate tradition: carp that swim upstream past the Dragon Gate transform into dragons. Mythological archetype aligns with Thread 2 Serpent (dragon-as-serpent continuity) plus Thread 6 Dying-Rising (transformation through trial).
Appearance. Vibrant scale patterns covering documented koi color varieties (Kohaku white-and-red, Sanke white-red-black, Showa black-red-white, Asagi blue-back-red-belly). Body length approximately 0.6-1.2 meters at adult bond. Sustained presence visible from above the water surface.
Personality. Patient. Endurance-oriented. The species-canonical upstream-swimming persistence translates to bond behavior: the Koi commits to direction and holds course.
Mechanical type. Rotational Water familiar. Evolutionary type — evolves into Dragon form at max bond plus Magister Templi Animal Communication.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Ch 21 China at the Yellow River Longmen (Dragon Gate) tributary. The protagonist must demonstrate sustained-presence at the Dragon Gate location across multiple days plus complete a Trade 9 Inscription substrate-puzzle at the location (the Koi recognizes the protagonist's understanding of the Dragon Gate substrate). T1\_Languages\_and\_Script\_Master plus T0\_Inscription\_Spine plus T1\_Trades\_Master Trade 9 govern the inscription puzzle implementation.
Bond quest acceptance signal. The Koi swims upstream past the protagonist's position at the Dragon Gate, then returns and holds presence within the protagonist's personal-space threshold. The species-canonical upstream-swimming completion act recognized as bond acceptance.
Abilities.
Evolution arc. Koi → Dragon. The only familiar in the 22-slot architecture that gains an additional entity form (distinct from Sea Turtle's scale expansion and Raven's pair evolution). Dragon-form content converges with Thread 2 Serpent dragon-continuity at Ch 21 China Jianmu (World Tree Thread 5 anchor) plus Ch 47-48 Mesoamerica Quetzalcoatl feathered-serpent synthesis.
Narrative arc. Koi represents transformation through persistence. The species-canonical upstream-swimming archetype operates as bond narrative: persistence past threshold yields transformation. Philosophical complement to Paravani's kundalini-rising (consciousness overcoming base nature) and the Child Familiar's 55-chapter solo survival (persistence past threshold yielding reunion).
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Water familiar. Dragon-form appearances at Thread 2 cross-cultural serpent-thread convergence chapters (Ch 24 Norse Jörmungandr; Ch 47-48 Mesoamerica Quetzalcoatl).
Thread anchors. Thread 2 Serpent (dragon-as-serpent continuity). Thread 6 Dying-Rising (transformation through trial). Thread 5 Tree of Life (Ch 21 Jianmu World Tree convergence).
Species. Octopus (*Octopus vulgaris* or *Octopus cyanea* per regional ecology). Minoan sacred octopus tradition; Kanaloa Polynesian connection.
Region. Bali Ch 04\.
Cultural substrate. Cross-cultural octopus-sacred tradition covering Minoan, Polynesian Kanaloa, and Pan-Pacific octopus-iconographic traditions per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence.
Appearance. Body length approximately 60 centimeters including arms. Iridescent skin with rapid color and texture change. Horizontal-pupil eyes. Neural complexity distributed across arms and central brain.
Personality. Curious. Investigative. Cross-species investigation behavior canonical. The Octopus treats the protagonist as an object-of-interest rather than as predator or prey — the approach of distributed intelligence encountering something novel.
Mechanical type. Rotational Water familiar. Utility / camouflage type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Bali Sanur coastal waters. The protagonist solves a sequence of underwater puzzles that the Octopus observes; at a specific threshold, the Octopus emerges and initiates play behavior (octopus curiosity indicator).
Bond quest acceptance signal. The Octopus briefly envelops the protagonist's arm in a cross-species investigation gesture.
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Octopus represents what intelligence looks like when it evolved completely separately from vertebrate lineages. Neural complexity distributed across arms and central brain counters the human-shaped assumption of what mind is. Philosophical foundation for the Grand Sage reveal at Ch 76-77 — intelligence is broader than human-shape. The philosophical-foundation role surfaces only in retrospect after the Ch 76-77 Grand Sage reveal hard-locked per CVD §17.9.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Water familiar. Reappears at Ch 42 Haiti (Caribbean octopus equivalent) with cross-lineage recognition.
Thread anchors. Thread 11 Trickster (distributed-intelligence as trickster-adjacent). Weaving 20 Unity of All Religions (cross-cultural octopus-sacred traditions, Minoan plus Polynesian Kanaloa).
Species. *Chelonia mydas* (green sea turtle). Widely distributed Indian Ocean species. 80-plus year lifespan canonical.
Region. Ch 08 Swahili Coast — Mafia Archipelago / Zanzibar nesting grounds.
Cultural substrate. Austronesian plus African plus Native American Turtle Island planetary-carrier archetype — one of the most cross-culturally consistent sacred animal traditions per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence.
Appearance. Approximately 1-meter shell length, 150 kilogram weight. Olive-green shell with darker markings. Precise navigation canonical — the same turtle returns to the same nesting beach across decades.
Personality. Serene patience. Oceanic-scale thinking — processes events on seasonal-to-generational timeframes. Differentiated from Shell (sustained-bond Flores softshell turtle, ancient-memory type for river/lake environments): Kasa is the oceanic-traveler, moving through world currents and seeing planetary scale.
Mechanical type. Rotational Water familiar. Endurance plus navigation type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Mafia Archipelago sea turtle nesting grounds. Night-time observation of nesting ritual across multiple nights (patience canonical) without disturbing nesting turtles.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Kasa permits the protagonist to help release hatchlings to sea (acceptance through shared-ritual participation parallel to conservation-ecology canon).
Abilities.
Evolution arc. Sea Turtle → Cosmic Turtle (planetary scale) at max bond plus specific questline. Cosmic Turtle form extends the navigational ability to trans-oceanic scale and grants the protagonist turtle-mythological planetary-carrier perception at the Ch 38 Azores midpoint.
Narrative arc. Kasa represents planetary-scale perception — the slow, wide, deep-time consciousness of ancient ocean travelers. Philosophical foundation parallel to Shell's Ch 02 ancient patience but scaled to planetary rather than local ancient memory. Kasa was born when the Azores were still above sea level (at turtle generational memory scale) — sets up Thread 4 Catastrophe Memory resolution at Ch 38 Azores midpoint.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Water familiar. Reappears at Ch 36-37 Atlantic crossing plus Ch 42 Caribbean (sea turtle trans-oceanic range) plus Ch 62 Caribbean / Taíno reflection (the Taíno turtle-at-the-origin tradition; the warm-water range where Kasa was bonded at Ch 8 and ranged at Ch 42 — CORRECTED at the Ch-62 build from a doubly-wrong "Pacific Northwest / Turtle Island" pairing: Turtle Island is an Eastern-Woodlands cosmology [Ch 44 Haudenosaunee], the Pacific-Northwest are Raven-cosmology peoples, and the green sea turtle is a warm-water animal absent from cold PNW seas). Cross-cultural Turtle Island synthesis content at Ch 76-77 Grand Sage reveal hard-locked per CVD §17.9 — Kasa's planetary-carrier content surfaces only in retrospect.
Thread anchors. Thread 4 Catastrophe Memory (planetary-flood-survival species). Thread 5 Tree of Life / World Axis (Turtle Island cosmic-axis tradition). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (planetary-vril-awareness).
Species. Amazon river dolphin (*Inia geoffrensis*) / Boto. Sacred Amazonian Boto shapeshifter tradition; Congo river dolphin parallel.
Region. Ch 50 Amazon.
Cultural substrate. Amazonian Boto tradition: the river dolphin that takes human form at night per Pan-Amazonian descendant-community ethnographic record. Cross-Atlantic river dolphin sacred-tradition parallels per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence. Depiction standard per CVD §6 applies at Ch 50 — accurate, respectful depiction sourced from publicly available ethnographic material; community-protection from combat or kill mechanics maintained.
Appearance. Approximately 2.5-meter body length adult *Inia geoffrensis*. Pink-grey coloration variation (juveniles grey; adults pink per species-canonical pigmentation pattern). Unfused cervical vertebrae enabling head-rotation flexibility distinct from oceanic dolphins. Elongated rostrum. Small eyes adapted for turbid Amazon-river sensory environment.
Personality. Boto-tradition canonical curiosity plus playfulness plus night-shapeshifter tradition complexity of presence. Treats the protagonist with investigative-curiosity register at river-form encounter. Night-form shapeshifter-tradition appearance is witness-only per CVD §6 depiction standard — the protagonist does not engage the night-form shapeshifter as ally or target; tradition respect absolute.
Mechanical type. Rotational Water familiar. Shapeshifter unique-among-22-slots — switches between river dolphin form and anthropomorphic night-form per Amazonian tradition.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Sustained respectful-distance observation across a multi-day Amazon river-system traversal plus ayahuasca-vision-serpent Thread 2 closure beat acceptance plus respectful depiction of the Pan-Amazonian tradition maintained per CVD §6.
Bond quest acceptance signal. The Boto surfaces beside the protagonist at a witness-encounter site in the Amazon river system, holds sustained eye-contact at river-form acceptance-protocol register. No contact in night-form shapeshifter register per CVD §6.
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Boto represents sacred-tradition shapeshifter-consciousness — what consciousness looks like at river-form / night-form dual-presence register per Amazonian tradition. Philosophical complement to Octopus (distributed-intelligence consciousness) and Shell (ancient-patience consciousness). Cross-tradition river-dolphin-sacred-tradition Pan-Amazonian closure beat for Thread 2 Americas-arc resolution before Ch 51-65 transition.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Water familiar. CVD §6 depiction standard observance continuous across all Amazon river-system reappearance contexts (Ch 65 Antarctica Return per Vimana-enabled Pan-Amazonian return; Ch 76-77 cross-cultural river-dolphin-sacred-tradition Grand Sage reveal adjacency hard-locked per CVD §17.9).
Thread anchors. Thread 2 Serpent (ayahuasca-vision-serpent Pan-Amazonian closure beat per T1\_Threads\_22\_Master\_References Thread 2 Ch 50). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (Amazonian-river-system vital-force tradition register). Weaving 10 Sacred Plants (ayahuasca pharmaceutical-traditional-knowledge per T1\_Threads\_22\_Master\_References Weaving 10 Ch 50).
Species. *Balaena mysticetus* (Bowhead whale). 200-plus year lifespan canonical.
Region. Ch 56 Arctic.
Cultural substrate. Inuit whale ceremonialism canon. Norse plus Inuit Arctic sea serpent traditions converge at this familiar — the bowhead is what those traditions were pointing at. Depiction standard per CVD §6 applies at Ch 56 — accurate, respectful Inuit ceremonial tradition rendered from publicly available ethnographic material.
Appearance. Body length 14-18 meters at adult bond. Massive bow-shaped skull canonical to species (the namesake feature). Mottled-black coloration with white chin and underbelly patches in older individuals. No dorsal fin. The 200-plus year individual the protagonist bonds with carries the longest individual-lifespan canon in the 22-slot architecture.
Personality. Multi-century patience. Vocal communication via low-frequency calls canonical to the species. The 200-plus year individual the protagonist bonds with was alive when the protagonist's child-self last passed through northern European waters at Ch 29 Sámi era. Recognition across the journey is canonical: the bowhead remembers.
Mechanical type. Rotational Water familiar. Legendary type unlocked via specific questline.
Bond quest approach mechanic. The protagonist's Animal Communication ability, extended underwater through the Vimana's capability per T1\_Vril\_and\_Magic\_System\_Master, perceives a large marine animal in the Arctic waters beneath the ice shelf. Communication with the bowhead reveals 200-plus years of Arctic observation — the most unexpected intelligence source of Ch 56\.
Bond quest acceptance signal. The bowhead surfaces at the Vimana's underwater observation aperture, holds vocal communication exchange across multiple low-frequency call cycles. The species-canonical low-frequency vocalization completion act recognized as bond acceptance.
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Bowhead represents the oldest-living individual witness in the arc — alive across the journey from Ch 29 Sámi era through Ch 56 modern. The cross-chapter individual-memory bridge is unique to Bowhead in the 22-slot architecture (other cross-chapter recognitions operate through descendant-species recognition or species-collective memory). Bowhead's bond grants the protagonist witness to the full Ch 29-56 span at individual-cetacean-memory depth.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Bond formed Ch 56\. Cross-chapter individual-memory bridge canonical to Ch 29 Sámi era (the bowhead the protagonist bonds with at Ch 56 was alive during Ch 29). Ch 58 Antarctica appearance during the Phase 3 multi-register manifestation stabilization (the bowhead arrives at the ice shelf underwater observation point).
Thread anchors. Thread 1 Vril Parallels (cetacean low-frequency vital-force tradition register). Thread 2 Serpent (Norse plus Inuit Arctic sea serpent traditions converge at the bowhead).
Species. *Panthera tigris sumatrae* (Sumatran tiger). Critically endangered Indonesian tiger subspecies — the only surviving Indonesian tiger lineage after Bali tiger (extinct 1937\) and Javan tiger (extinct 1970s).
Region. Sumatra Ch 05\.
Cultural substrate. Batak tradition holds the tiger as an ancestor figure. The darker, more closely spaced stripes than mainland subspecies are species-canonical to island isolation.
Appearance. Approximately 2.5 meters head-to-tail length. Darker orange coat with closer-set black stripes than mainland tigers. Smaller body size canonical to island dwarfism. Alert golden-amber eyes. Silent movement despite size.
Personality. Solitary by nature. Territorial with precise boundary maintenance. Patient hunter — stalks and assesses before action. Treats the protagonist as a fellow apex being rather than prey or threat.
Mechanical type. Rotational Ground familiar. Apex predator intimidation plus infectious strike type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Sumatran rainforest between Batak highlands and Srivijayan coastal ports. The protagonist tracks Khan through forest without Khan detecting, for a canonical distance (patience plus stealth plus Animal Communication test).
Bond quest acceptance signal. Khan permits the protagonist to approach kill and share meat (tiger behavior indicator of pack-acceptance).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Khan represents what apex-predator intelligence looks like when evolved in isolation — the Sumatran subspecies's behavioral differences from mainland relatives (smaller, more silent, more precise). Island-evolution parallel to Homo floresiensis (Ch 02\) and Octopus separate-evolution (Ch 04). Philosophical content: multiple lineages of apex consciousness evolving independently — preparation for the Grand Sage reveal about consciousness diversity. The preparatory role surfaces only in retrospect after the Ch 76-77 Grand Sage reveal hard-locked per CVD §17.9.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Ground familiar. Reappears as a Vimana-band revisit excursion within the Ch 59-65 free-travel band (adult Sumatra revisit; default authoring-home Ch 63 per the D-22 ruling 2026-07-12, the Ch-60 Japan rescope having displaced the old "Ch 60 Asia Revisit" home) — if Ch 05 bond was earned, modern Khan descendant recognizes the protagonist. If Sumatran tiger extinction occurs in real-world timeline during launch window, the revisit includes memorial content per CVD §6 cultural depiction standard substrate-acknowledgment register.
Thread anchors. Thread 3 Antagonist (institutional-extraction species-endangerment context). Thread 11 Trickster (silent-stalking apex-patience).
Species. *Elephas maximus maximus* (Sri Lankan elephant). The largest Asian elephant subspecies. Cultural significance in Buddhist and Hindu traditions simultaneously — rare cross-religious sacred-animal status.
Region. Sri Lanka Ch 06\.
Cultural substrate. Sri Lankan Buddhist plus Hindu cross-religious sacred-elephant tradition. Cross-cultural elephant-veneration substrate per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence.
Appearance. Approximately 3-meter shoulder height, 5 tonnes. Darker skin pigmentation than mainland Asian elephants. Larger proportional ears. Approximately forty years old at bond — middle age for wild elephant.
Personality. Elephant patience and species memory canonical — specific memory for individual humans over decades. Responds to the protagonist's vril with recognition rather than alarm.
Mechanical type. Rotational Ground familiar. Charge plus species memory type (heavy).
Bond quest approach mechanic. Ch 06 post-False-Naga resolution. Muthu's water route through specific elephant corridors was disrupted by the False Naga's presence; resolving that conflict is the prerequisite. Then Mahout Bandula per T3\_Supporting\_Characters teaches mahout protocol. Approach mechanic: specific vocalization plus positioning plus approach sequence.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Muthu permits the protagonist to rest against his flank (elephant acceptance indicator).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Muthu represents what species memory looks like when extended across an individual animal's lifespan of 60-70 years. Elephants demonstrably remember specific individuals, grieve their dead, show evidence of empathy. Muthu is the first familiar where the bond is primarily about shared memory rather than shared action.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Ground familiar. Reappears at Ch 07 South India (elephant cultural continuity). At a Vimana-band revisit excursion within the Ch 59-65 free-travel band (adult Sri Lanka revisit; default home Ch 63 per D-22) — if Ch 06 bond earned — an older Muthu or his descendant recognizes the protagonist (elephants recognize individuals after decades canonical).
Thread anchors. Thread 5 Tree of Life / World Axis (Muthu's Anuradhapura Sri-Maha-Bodhi bonding-site, Ch 06 convergence). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (prana / Ayurvedic vital-force recognition).
Species. *Canis simensis* (Ethiopian wolf). The world's rarest canid — fewer than 500 remaining worldwide. Ethiopian highland endemic species (Afro-alpine ecosystem above 3000 meters).
Region. Ethiopia / Rift Valley Ch 09-10.
Cultural substrate. Local tradition treats Ethiopian wolf as a creature who has watched human civilization develop from a specific altitude. Ethiopian highland spiritual tradition substrate per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence.
Appearance. Slender build. Reddish-brown coat with white throat / chest markings. Long legs adapted for high-altitude pursuit. Adolescent age at bond.
Personality. Solitary hunter but pack-social. Patient. Watches before acting. Unlike Khan (Ch 05 apex-predator territorial) or Muthu (Ch 06 herbivore-patience), Desta represents adapted-isolation consciousness — evolved for a landscape most canids cannot survive.
Mechanical type. Rotational Ground familiar. Fast ground, high-altitude tactical awareness plus pack-coordination type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Simien Mountains (Ras Dashen area). The protagonist demonstrates high-altitude stillness at a specific dawn vantage point across multiple Afro-alpine mornings. Must complete Ch 09 inscription-monopoly-break before Desta will approach (she recognizes knowledge-liberation as consistent with her watch-over-civilization role).
Bond quest acceptance signal. Desta matches the protagonist's pace on a shared traverse (canid acceptance through shared-movement synchronization).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Desta represents adapted-isolation consciousness — species evolved for extreme environmental specialization, watching the rest of the world from geographic distance. Philosophical parallel to Ethiopia's antagonist-family-failure (geographic defensibility preserving institutions). Sets up Thread 18 Sacred Mountains pattern: altitude as spiritual-defensive-zone.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Ground familiar. Reappears at Ch 10 Rift Valley (she guides the protagonist south through highland-to-valley transitions) plus Ch 59 Africa Revisit (modern Ethiopia revisit). Critically endangered status means the Ch 59 revisit may show conservation-outcome variance depending on real-world timeline at launch per CVD §6 substrate-acknowledgment register.
Thread anchors. Thread 18 Sacred Mountains (altitude as spiritual-defensive-zone). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (Ethiopian spiritual tradition convergence).
Species. *Equus ferus przewalskii* (Przewalski's horse). The only truly wild horse species — never domesticated. Declared extinct in the wild in 1969\. Reintroduction programs established. Genetically distinct from all domestic horses.
Region. Eurasian Steppe Ch 22\.
Cultural substrate. Steppe horse-cultural substrate per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence covering Mongolian, Kazakh, and broader Central Asian horse-tradition substrate.
Appearance. Compact build canonical to species. Erect mane (unlike domestic horses which have falling manes). Dun coloration with primitive markings — dorsal stripe, zebra-like leg stripes, dark mane and tail. Approximately 1.3 meter shoulder height at bond.
Personality. Flight response faster and more sustained than any domestic horse. Threat assessment more accurate than domestic horses. Will not respond to commands — will respond to established relationship.
Mechanical type. Rotational Ground familiar. Stealth / fast-ground type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Requires completed Horse Wheel and Language questline content per T1\_Trades\_Master Trade 2 (Mining tier-seed Ch 19 home) plus T1\_Languages\_and\_Script\_Master Ch 22 steppe-horse-domestication substrate. Established through parallel activity — the player rides alongside Taki's movement, matching pace and direction across a specific distance. Not command. Companionship.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Taki permits sustained parallel travel at sustained pace without initiating flight response.
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Taki represents what wildness actually is — not aggression but authenticity. Never compromised by relationship with human civilization. Philosophical complement to Berkut F5 (the partnership-orientation eagle hunter tradition) on the Ch 22 dual-familiar chapter: Taki represents wildness preserved; Berkut represents partnership negotiated.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Ground familiar. Reappears at Ch 28-30 European chapters during steppe-to-Europe transition arc.
Thread anchors. Thread 3 Antagonist (wildness-versus-domestication as Thread 3 institutional-domestication counterpoint).
Species. *Varanus komodoensis* (Komodo dragon). The world's largest living lizard. Apex predator.
Region. Flores Island adult revisit Ch 60\.
Cultural substrate. Local tradition documents the Komodo as child of the dragon princess Putri Naga. Dragon Island thread anchor — the Komodo's presence on Flores is the Ch 02 cultural context that persists into Ch 60 adult revisit.
Appearance. Approximately 3 meter body length at adult. Massive head plus muscular tail. Forked tongue for scent-tracking. Olive-grey scales with darker mottling. Adult age at bond.
Personality. Patience that is specifically reptilian — complete absence of anxiety about time. He will wait days for an opportunity. He does not perform submission or affection. He performs presence.
Mechanical type. Rotational Ground familiar. Ambush type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. The adult revisit to Flores provides the bond opportunity. The return requires having maintained positive faction standing with the Manggarai community from Ch 03\. Ora has been near the Manggarai village since the child's departure — Ch 02-03 bonds carry forward to Ch 60\.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Ora permits sustained-proximity contact at Manggarai village periphery without initiating ambush-predator response. Komodo dragon acceptance protocol: sustained extended-tongue scent-sampling without strike-posture transition. Ora's species-canonical patience operates at acceptance-determination scale rather than ambush-pressure scale; this acceptance-signal bond-formation moment is the first-instance in the arc of cross-bond-recognition between protagonist and Ch 02-03-era familiar pattern (Shell W1 sustained-bond carries through; Ch 60 Ora bond is the modern-arc-first-bond per Section 6.3 cross-chapter reappearance table requiring Ch 02-03 Manggarai faction standing carried forward).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Ora represents reptilian-consciousness — the apex-predator model that has persisted unchanged across millions of years, contrasting the rapid evolution of mammalian apex-predators. Philosophical complement to Khan (island-isolation apex) and Octopus (distributed-intelligence apex). Thread 2 Serpent Ch 02 Dragon Island anchor carries through to Ch 60 via Ora.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Bond forms via a Vimana-band Flores revisit excursion within the Ch 59-65 free-travel band (default authoring-home Ch 63 per the D-22 ruling 2026-07-12; the Ch-60 Japan rescope displaced the old "Ch 60 Flores revisit" home, and after the Ch-65 lock the arc is all otherworld, so Ch 59-65 is the terminal window for this Earth-endemic bond); the bond requires Ch 02-03 Manggarai faction standing carried forward across the ancient-to-modern-arc gap. Ora then rotates as a carried Ground familiar from bonding through Ch 77. Ora remains a base-slot G5 (no numerical-canon change: 33 species / 22 slots intact).
Thread anchors. Thread 2 Serpent (Komodo Dragon as serpent-adjacent apex-predator tradition). Thread 3 Antagonist (Flores revisit chapter opens modern Flores antagonist-family operational content).
Species. *Rangifer tarandus* (reindeer). Sámi-reindeer relationship canonical as the oldest continuous human-animal partnership in Europe.
Region. Ch 29 Sámi.
Cultural substrate. Sámi-reindeer relationship; sacred Polaris connection (reindeer antlers as North-star orientation marker in Sámi astronomical tradition). Sámi noaidi drum tradition substrate. Depiction standard per CVD §6 applies at Ch 29 — accurate, respectful Sámi tradition rendered from publicly available ethnographic material; joik composition hard-line per CVD §17 hard line never composed; reindeer-iconography rendering at noaidi drum aesthetic preserved.
Appearance. Approximately 1.2 meter shoulder height at adult bond. Large branching antlers (both sexes carry antlers in *Rangifer tarandus* canonical to species). Thick winter coat in white plus grey plus brown variation. Wide hooves for snow traversal.
Personality. Migratory patience canonical to species. The reindeer the protagonist bonds with carries the noaidi-tradition lineage recognition — the Sámi noaidi tradition recognized reindeer-consciousness register before the depletion era. Treats the protagonist with measured-trust register: the bond develops across the migration cycle, not at single-encounter scale.
Mechanical type. Rotational Ground familiar. Navigational bonus plus winter-traversal type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Ch 29 Sámi siida migration cycle. The protagonist accompanies the migration across canonical seasonal range plus completes Trade 9 Inscription noaidi drum substrate-puzzle (the reindeer recognizes the protagonist's understanding of the noaidi-drum substrate). T1\_Languages\_and\_Script\_Master plus T0\_Inscription\_Spine plus T1\_Trades\_Master Trade 9 govern the inscription puzzle implementation. CVD §6 depiction standard observance continuous.
Bond quest acceptance signal. The reindeer permits the protagonist to harness antler-mounted noaidi drum (a Sámi-tradition acceptance-protocol register canonical to the noaidi lineage). No protagonist composition of joik per CVD §17 hard line; the reindeer responds to listening register only.
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Reindeer represents human-animal partnership at multi-millennium continuity scale — the oldest continuous European human-animal partnership canonical. Philosophical complement to Khan (island-isolation apex), Muthu (multi-religious sacred-animal), and Desta (adapted-isolation apex). The partnership-continuity register sets up Thread 1 Vril Parallels noaidi-spiritual-tradition convergence at Ch 29 plus Thread 8 Mystery Schools Arctic shamanic-tradition convergence.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Ground familiar. Cross-chapter individual-memory bridge to Bowhead W7 — the bowhead at Ch 56 was alive during Ch 29 Sámi era per W7 entry above; the reindeer-bond at Ch 29 plus bowhead-bond at Ch 56 share the Ch 29-56 individual-memory bridge canonical.
Thread anchors. Thread 1 Vril Parallels (noaidi-spiritual-tradition convergence). Thread 8 Mystery Schools (Arctic shamanic-tradition convergence). Thread 18 Sacred Mountains (Polaris astronomical-tradition altitude convergence).
Species. Jaguar (*Panthera onca*) primary canonical / Ocelot (*Leopardus pardalis*) variant per bond-path species-determination protocol. L1 Truly Good path: Maya jaguar-king tradition *Panthera onca* primary. L2 Good Enough path: species-determination ambivalent. L4-L5 Evil path: Aztec ocelotl warrior tradition variant *Leopardus pardalis*.

Cultural substrate. Olmec were-jaguar tradition (the earliest Mesoamerican apex-predator spiritual-tradition substrate). Maya jaguar-king tradition (K'inich Janaab' Pakal plus Yax Pasaj Classic Maya royal-iconography). Aztec ocelotl warrior tradition (Ocelotl military-society plus Cuauhtli Eagle warrior counterpart plus Codex Mendoza substrate). Popol Vuh hero-twins jaguar-iconography continuity per T1\_Threads\_22\_Master\_References Thread 11 Ch 48 (Hunahpu and Xbalanque jaguar-aspect content).
Appearance. *Panthera onca* primary-canonical 1.7 meter body length plus rosette-pattern coat distinct from Old World leopard pattern plus muscular build plus bone-crushing-bite-strength apex-predator capability. Ocelot variant *Leopardus pardalis* 0.8-1 meter body length plus similar rosette coat plus smaller-build-but-comparable-stealth profile.
Personality. Apex-predator-integrated-into-divine-tradition register per Olmec plus Maya plus Aztec spiritual-tradition continuity. Treats the protagonist with apex-predator assessment integrated with vril-signature recognition (sacred-jaguar-tradition ancestral-recognition register). Night-active species-canonical pattern aligns with Mesoamerican night-jaguar-iconographic tradition.
Mechanical type. Rotational Ground familiar. Nocturnal bonus plus Mesoamerican apex-predator spiritual-tradition register type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Yucatán Maya Tikal plus Chichén Itzá apex-jaguar-territory engagement at dawn or dusk threshold-time register. Sustained respectful-tracking across multi-day duration without breaking species-canonical respectful-distance threshold. Popol Vuh hero-twins questline first-stage completion (K'iche' Maya tradition respect register required per CVD §6). Integrity threshold maintained across the approach sequence.
Bond quest acceptance signal. The apex-jaguar surfaces at the protagonist's respectful-distance threshold, holds sustained eye-contact at apex-predator acceptance-determination register, permits protagonist-approach to kill-site shared-presence (apex-predator-acceptance protocol parallel to Khan G1 Sumatran-tiger acceptance pattern at Ch 05 — cross-arc apex-predator bond-acceptance pattern continuity).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Jaguar represents apex-predator-integrated-into-Mesoamerican-spiritual-tradition register — what Mesoamerican civilizations recognized about jaguar-consciousness across Olmec plus Maya plus Aztec continuity. Philosophical complement to Khan G1 (island-evolution apex-consciousness Sumatra), Desta G3 (adapted-isolation apex-consciousness Ethiopian highland), and Ora G5 (reptilian-apex-consciousness Komodo). Cross-cultural apex-predator-sacred-tradition Americas-arc Thread 2 convergence anchor at Ch 47-48 Quetzalcoatl synthesis.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Ground familiar. Reappears at Ch 47 Quetzalcoatl-serpent-synthesis (Mesoamerican apex-predator counterpoint to feathered-serpent synthesis) plus Ch 52 Bolivia Puma Punku Andean apex-predator continuity register.
Thread anchors. Thread 2 Serpent (Mesoamerican apex-predator-counterpoint to Quetzalcoatl feathered-serpent synthesis). Thread 11 Trickster (Popol Vuh hero-twins jaguar-aspect tradition). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (Mesoamerican apex-predator vital-force tradition convergence).
Species. *Leucopsar rothschildi* (Bali starling). Critically endangered endemic Balinese species — fewer than 100 wild individuals.
Region. Bali Ch 04\.
Cultural substrate. Sacred in Balinese tradition. White plumage canonical to species, vivid blue eye patches, crested head.
Appearance. Approximately 25 centimeter body length. Pure white plumage with distinctive black wing and tail tips. Bright blue bare skin around eyes (species-canonical characteristic). Sharp alert posture. Vocalization includes both whistled calls and harsher chatter notes.
Personality. Alert, observant, quick-reacting. Wary of humans due to historical poaching (critically endangered status). Treats the protagonist with initial suspicion — Kira approaches only after repeated non-threatening encounters.
Mechanical type. Rotational Flying familiar. Aerial strike / scouting-reconnaissance type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Balinese forest edges near subak rice terraces. The protagonist sits still at dawn across a canonical number of mornings without attempting approach (patience canonical to bird-watching practice).
Bond quest acceptance signal. Kira lands on the protagonist's outstretched arm without hesitation.
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Kira represents the fragility of endemic species in the face of antagonist family extractive operations. Historical extinction threat contextualizes Thread 3 Antagonist. Kira's presence is the player's daily small victory over extinction.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Flying familiar. Reappears as a Vimana-band revisit excursion within the Ch 59-65 free-travel band (adult Bali revisit; default authoring-home Ch 63 per the D-22 ruling 2026-07-12, the Ch-60 Japan rescope having displaced the old "Ch 60 Asia Revisit" home) — if Ch 04 bond was earned, modern Kira descendant recognizes the protagonist.
Thread anchors. Thread 3 Antagonist (endemic-species endangerment). Weaving 10 Sacred Plant Traditions (Balinese subak ecosystem context).
Species. *Pavo cristatus* (Indian peacock). India's national bird. Sacred to Hindu god Murugan / Kartikeya.
Region. South India Ch 07\.
Cultural substrate. Iconographic role: peacock as serpent-predator (peacock kills serpents — consciousness overcoming base nature, same principle as kundalini rising). Thread 2 Serpent inversion — the peacock is the serpent's mythological predator.
Appearance. Body length 1.1 meters, train length 1.5 meters in males. Iridescent blue-green plumage. Eyespots (ocelli) on train — each a small mirror to consciousness perceiving itself. Bold alert posture.
Personality. Display behavior when assessing a threat inadequate. Does not panic. Assesses. Processes slowly and responds definitively. Alarm vocalizations recognized by Indian wildlife as early-warning system.
Mechanical type. Rotational Flying familiar. Display / intimidation utility type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Palani hills, Murugan sacred mountain (one of six Arupadai Veedu abodes). Unique prerequisite: requires Crown-seat Tier 2 ability achievement per T1\_Ability\_Tree v1.4 — Paravani will not approach protagonists without developed crown-vril-seat activity. The only familiar in the 22-slot architecture whose bond quest has a vril-seat prerequisite.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Full tail-train display toward the protagonist in non-threatening context (peacock ritualized display recognized as acceptance).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Paravani represents consciousness overcoming base nature — the peacock-kills-serpent iconographic tradition as direct parallel to kundalini rising. The only familiar whose bond quest has a vril-seat prerequisite. Represents what happens when vril perception develops sufficiently that animal consciousness recognizes it.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Flying familiar. Reappears as a Vimana-band revisit excursion within the Ch 59-65 free-travel band (adult South India revisit; default authoring-home Ch 63 per the D-22 ruling 2026-07-12, the Ch-60 Japan rescope having displaced the old "Ch 60 Asia Revisit" home) plus Ch 20-22 Silk Road passage (peacock trade across regions). Associations echo at Ch 15 Egypt (peacocks as royal birds) and Ch 23 Greece (Hera's peacock iconography).
Thread anchors. Thread 2 Serpent (peacock-kills-serpent iconographic tradition as Thread 2 inversion). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (crown-vril-seat kundalini-rising convergence). Weaving 4 plus 21 (music / movement-tradition peacock-display rhythmic alignment).
Species. *Haliaeetus vocifer* (African Fish Eagle). National bird of multiple African nations. The quintessential African wilderness vocalization canonical.
Region. Swahili Coast Ch 08\.
Cultural substrate. Sacred status in Swahili coastal tradition. Cross-African raptor-tradition substrate per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence.
Appearance. Wingspan 1.5 meters. Distinctive white head plus chestnut body plus black wings plus yellow beak / feet. Alert piercing gaze. Characteristic "kyow-kow-kow" call canonical to species.
Personality. Territorial and direct. Does not feign what it does not intend. Unmistakable body-language signals intent clearly (aggressive display vs. accepting posture canonical to species).
Mechanical type. Rotational Flying familiar. Long-distance scout / aerial strike type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Zanzibar or Mafia Archipelago coastal waters. The protagonist demonstrates sustained-observation patience at specific coastal vantage point across multiple fishing cycles plus Animal Communication baseline Intuition 50-plus.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Msafiri lands on the protagonist's proffered arm (raptor acceptance with trained-falconer parallel).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Msafiri represents African wilderness directness — no ambiguity, no pretense. Contrast to Ch 07 Paravani's display-based subtlety. Represents the possibility of relating to a world without hidden agendas.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Flying familiar. Reappears at Ch 11-13 African inland chapters (African continental range) plus Ch 59 Africa Revisit (adult revisit). Cross-chapter encounters with other fish eagle populations at Ch 50 Amazon (different species — Harpy Eagle parallel) for Thread 2 cross-species-raptor continuity.
Thread anchors. Thread 1 Vril Parallels (Swahili spiritual tradition convergence). Thread 11 Trickster (African wilderness directness as anti-trickster-counterpoint).
Species. Simurgh — Persian and Sufi literary-mythological tradition. The word in Persian means "thirty birds" (*si \+ morgh*) — the wordplay that is the literary heart of Attar's *Conference of the Birds* (1177 CE): the thirty birds that complete the Seven Valleys discover they themselves are the Simurgh.
Region. Arabia / Persia Ch 19\.
Cultural substrate. Ferdowsi's *Shahnameh* records the Simurgh as old enough to have witnessed the world's destruction three times. Attar's *Conference of the Birds* renders the Simurgh as the divine. Thread 1 vril-parallel (haoma / soma) convergence plus Thread 8 Mystery Schools (Sufi tradition) anchor.
Appearance. Massive avian form with peacock-like train plus dog-like head plus claws plus the literary-tradition canonical iridescent plumage. Body length canonically larger than any natural avian species (the Simurgh is mythological, not biological). The protagonist perceives the Simurgh as the visible-form of an ancient consciousness rather than as a discrete animal individual.
Personality. The oldest conscious being the child encounters in the human world. She predates the vril depletion event. Interacts with the protagonist as between peers across an enormous gap in expressed capability.
Mechanical type. Rotational Flying familiar. Legendary type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Complete the *Conference of the Birds* questline — the seven valleys (Search, Love, Knowledge, Detachment, Unity, Bewilderment, Annihilation). Each valley corresponds to a challenge drawn from Attar's text. T1\_Story\_Spine governs the questline scene implementation at Phase 6 cascade authoring; T1\_Threads\_22\_Master\_References Thread 8 Mystery Schools governs the Sufi Seven Valleys substrate.
Bond quest acceptance signal. The Simurgh appears at the Seventh Valley (Annihilation / *fana*) after the protagonist completes the preceding six. The protagonist's recognition that the thirty birds and the Simurgh are not separate is the moment of acceptance — the bond forms in the recognition itself, not in any external acceptance gesture.
Abilities.
Narrative arc. The philosophical climax of the familiar system. Her presence confirms what the entire game has been building — the Simurgh has understood the Grand Sage's revelation for millennia. The structural parallel to the Ch 76-77 Grand Sage waterfall reveal is hard-locked per CVD §17.9 — the Simurgh's knowledge does not surface as explicit content before Ch 76-77; her quality-of-ancient-knowing registers as atmospheric without disclosing the reveal.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Flying familiar. Reappears at Ch 31 Iberia Moorish Sufi tradition continuity plus Ch 69 the Duat Final Negotiation. The Simurgh's appearance at Ch 69 the Duat is canonical to the final-arc fairy-realm threshold.
Thread anchors. Thread 8 Mystery Schools (Sufi Seven Valleys as Mystery School spine). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (haoma / soma Zoroastrian-Vedic vital-force convergence at Ch 19).
Species. *Aquila chrysaetos* (Golden Eagle). The most widely distributed eagle species. Central Asian Berkutchi (eagle hunting) tradition of Kazakhstan and Mongolia — the oldest documented human-raptor partnership.
Region. Eurasian Steppe Ch 22\.
Cultural substrate. Berkutchi eagle-hunter tradition canonical to Central Asian steppe peoples. Cross-cultural raptor-partnership substrate per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence.
Appearance. Wingspan 2 meters at adult female (berkutchi tradition canonical bonds female Golden Eagles). Dark brown plumage with golden head plus nape coloration. Yellow legs plus dark talons. Adult age at bond.
Personality. Partnership orientation — treats the bond as a professional relationship with specific mutual obligations. Does not perform submission or affection. Performs presence. Philosophical complement to Taki G4 on the Ch 22 dual-familiar chapter: Taki represents wildness preserved; Berkut represents partnership negotiated.
Mechanical type. Rotational Flying familiar. Hunting partner type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Eagle hunter NPC at Ch 22 Steppe (per T3\_Supporting\_Characters) tests the player's understanding of traditional partnership requirements. The test involves navigating a terrain challenge using only Berkut's aerial reconnaissance without accessing player abilities. CVD §6 depiction standard observance continuous across Berkutchi tradition rendering.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Berkut accepts traditional leather-glove perch after the terrain challenge is completed to berkutchi standard.
Abilities.
Narrative arc. Berkut represents human-raptor partnership — the oldest sustained human-predator partnership, and contrast to Ch 07 Paravani's display-based bond plus Ch 08 Msafiri's directness plus Ch 19 Simurgh's legendary stature. The partnership-negotiated register on the Ch 22 dual-familiar chapter contrasts Taki G4's wildness-preserved register.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Flying familiar. Reappears at Ch 22-29 Eurasian transit arc.
Thread anchors. Thread 3 Antagonist (steppe-tradition as institutional-partnership-counterpoint to extractive-institutional-antagonist-patterns).
Species. *Corvus corax* (Common Raven). Odin's ravens (Huginn "Thought" and Muninn "Memory") tradition; Pacific Northwest Raven trickster tradition; Celtic Morrigan raven tradition.
Region. Ch 24 Norse / Celtic.
Cultural substrate. Cross-cultural raven-tradition substrate covering Norse Odinic plus Pacific Northwest plus Celtic Morrigan plus broader Northern-Hemisphere raven-iconographic tradition per CVD §3 Component 3 cultural convergence.
Appearance. Body length approximately 60-70 centimeters. Glossy black plumage with iridescent purple-blue sheen in sunlight. Massive black bill. Wedge-shaped tail in flight. Highly intelligent — corvid cognitive capabilities canonical to species.
Personality. Trickster-intelligence canonical to corvid lineage. Plays. Tests. Watches. Treats the protagonist with mischief-curiosity register: the bond develops through play-and-test sequences rather than through patience-and-stillness sequences.
Mechanical type. Rotational Flying familiar. Intelligence / trickster type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Ch 24 Norse / Celtic. The protagonist completes a sequence of trickster-tradition substrate puzzles (Norse Odinic riddle plus Celtic Morrigan raven-augury plus Pacific Northwest raven-trickster recognition). The raven observes the protagonist's puzzle-solving across multiple cycles; bond approach engages when the protagonist demonstrates trickster-recognition register (recognizing the raven's mischief rather than reacting to it).
Bond quest acceptance signal. The raven lands on the protagonist's shoulder and steals a small object (the species-canonical corvid mischief-acceptance gesture). Returning the object is part of the acceptance protocol.
Abilities.
Evolution arc. Raven → Huginn-Muninn pair at max bond. Pair form grants both Huginn forward-thought and Muninn memory-recall as canonical Odinic tradition rendering.
Narrative arc. Raven represents trickster-intelligence integrated into multi-tradition canon. Norse Odin self-sacrifice at Yggdrasil (Thread 6 Dying-Rising convergence at Ch 24\) plus Pacific Northwest Raven trickster (Thread 11 Trickster Ch 24 anchor) plus Celtic Morrigan raven-augury (Thread 8 Mystery Schools Celtic tradition convergence at Ch 24). The pair-evolution at Bond 100 Mastery completes the trickster-intelligence canonical operation: thought plus memory operating as paired entities rather than as integrated singular consciousness.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Flying familiar. Pair-form appearances at Ch 24 Norse / Celtic plus Ch 30 British Isles (Druidic backward-continuity Newgrange Ireland C11 anchor) plus Ch 65 Antarctica Return Familiar's Choice arc (per Section 5.X).
Thread anchors. Thread 11 Trickster (Pacific Northwest Raven trickster tradition canonical anchor at Ch 24). Thread 6 Dying-Rising (Odin self-sacrifice at Yggdrasil convergence at Ch 24). Thread 8 Mystery Schools (Celtic Morrigan raven-augury convergence at Ch 24).
Species. *Vultur gryphus* (Andean Condor). The largest flying bird by wing area. Sacred Andean status; Inca mamakuna connection.
Region. Ch 53-55 Atacama.
Cultural substrate. Andean Apukuna mountain-spirit messenger tradition. Andean Amaru serpent tradition cross-substrate per Thread 2 cross-cultural serpent-thread convergence. Andean sacred-mountain vital-force traditions per Thread 1 Vril Parallels convergence at Ch 53-55.
Appearance. Wingspan up to 3.3 meters (species-canonical largest flying-bird wing-area). Black plumage with white wing-tip plus collar markings. Bare head canonical to species. Adult age at bond.
Personality. Altitude-mastery register canonical to species. Thermal-soaring efficiency operating at canonical atmospheric-pressure-sensitivity scale. Treats the protagonist with messenger-tradition register — the condor recognizes the protagonist's vril-signature at canonical Andean Apukuna messenger-tradition depth.
Mechanical type. Rotational Flying familiar. Altitude master type.
Bond quest approach mechanic. Ch 53 Approach. Sustained thermal-riding observation at Atacama altitude. The protagonist tracks the Andean Condor circling thermals across a multi-day observation period. Bond-introduction beat: the protagonist's vril-sight perceives the condor's altitude-perception as atmospheric-pressure-sensitivity at biological scale. The approach phase requires no contact — observation only. CVD §6 depiction standard observance continuous across Andean Apukuna tradition rendering.
Bond quest acceptance signal. Ch 54 Acceptance. Aerial reconnaissance bond depth. The protagonist enables the Andean Condor's perception-extension at altitude-ceiling — the bond mechanism allows the protagonist to read the Atacama Giant geoglyph from aerial vantage (the geoglyph's astronomical alignment is most clearly perceivable from altitude-ceiling, which exceeds the protagonist's solo flight capacity). The acceptance phase requires sustained vril-projection at altitude — the bond stabilizes only when the protagonist's vril-projection sustains the condor's altitude-ceiling under House of Velheim surveillance-military apparatus interference (the chapter's primary obstacle per T4\_House\_of\_Velheim\_Canonical).
Abilities.
Narrative arc. The Andean Condor represents altitude-mastery messenger-tradition consciousness — what consciousness looks like at canonical Andean sacred-mountain register per Apukuna tradition. Philosophical complement to Paravani F2 (display-based subtlety South India) and Simurgh F4 (legendary literary-tradition consciousness Persia). The Ch 55 simultaneous-mastery beat with Shell W1 canonicalizes the Vimana activation moment as the integration-point of the arc's foundational and altitude familiars.
Cross-chapter reappearance. Rotates as Flying familiar. Ch 58 Antarctica familiar-rotation includes F7 Andean Condor (one of three active flying-familiar slots applicable at apparatus-integration depth). Ch 65 Antarctica Return Familiar's Choice arc: F7 final mortal-world appearance per Section 5.X.
Thread anchors. Thread 2 Serpent (Andean Amaru serpent-tradition cross-substrate convergence). Thread 1 Vril Parallels (Andean sacred-mountain vital-force traditions). Thread 18 Sacred Mountains (Andean Apukuna mountain-spirit messenger tradition).
Per T0\_Hard\_Lines HL\_0058 plus CVD §17.12 cardinal numerical canon, the 22nd path-variable slot is reserved for the protagonist's childhood familiar from the fairy realm. The slot operates as path-variable per the 5-band integrity framework per CVD §9.2: outcome at Ch 58 resolves differently across L1 Truly Good, L2 Good Enough, L3 Drifting, L4 Evil, and L5 Pure Evil terminal paths.
Per T3\_Core\_Characters Ch 1 creation section, every elven birth carries an animal familiar spirit that presents itself to the elven child early in development. The familiar is not chosen through a menu — the player wanders in Ch 1, encounters creatures, and something responds based on the player's earliest choices and actions. The connection forms organically across the 12 fairy-realm-native legendary species per §1.1.
THE BONDING MECHANISM, STATED (Josh RULED 2026-07-30, the twenty-ninth sitting; docs/spine/DECISIONS\_PENDING\_JOSH.md is the authority). This ruling CONFIRMS the not-a-menu paragraph above and supplies the measure it left implicit; it replaces nothing. A Chapter 1 quest sends the child out into the woods at the edge of their range to play among the wildlife, and the twelve fairy-realm-native legendary species are what is out there to play with. Whichever of the twelve the player plays with the most — the most time spent with one species before the child returns — is the one that bonds. The measure is play and nothing else: no selection list, no confirmation prompt, and no moment where the game tells the child it is counting. The player who spends the afternoon with one creature has chosen; the player who spends it with six has chosen the one they kept coming back to.
The Ch 1 bond is the foundational relationship of the protagonist's entire arc. Everything that follows — the 77-chapter journey, the depletion-era human world, the childhood familiar's 55-chapter solo survival — rests on this foundational bond.
The Ch 01 closing sequence — the keep-away, and what crosses. Canon per docs/spine/DECISIONS\_PENDING\_JOSH.md sixth sitting and seventh sitting 2026-07-27; integration provenance docs/proposals/AMULET\_PROVENANCE\_BRIEF.md. After Ch 1's quests, story, familiar bonding, and friendship-making are complete, the chapter closes on one more morning. The protagonist wakes, takes the concealment ward off to look at it in bed while the sun comes in, and polishes it lying down. The familiar grabs it in play and runs off outside. The protagonist chases the familiar all the way out into the woods while it plays keep-away — and that is when the rift opens and swallows them both, and the amulet with them.
When the protagonist arrives in Flores Island Ch 02, the familiar bites the protagonist's hand in terror and runs. The protagonist follows and sees — through a cave entrance — a hunter with a period-appropriate weapon standing over an animal that looked like the familiar. The protagonist believes their companion is dead. The player believes this too.
The game does not clarify in Ch 02\.
Per T1\_Story\_Spine Ch 02 Vibrational Imprint puzzle implementation at Phase 6 cascade authoring: at the hunter's campsite, vril-sight reveals the trail — and reveals the hunter's path went to a different kill site than the site the player witnessed. This is the only Ch 02 textual signal that the childhood familiar survived. Attentive players find it. Most do not. The grief is designed to be real until Ch 58\.
The Ch 02 bite is understood at Ch 58 reunion as terror, not aggression — a species-canonical response to a hostile environmental shift (the rift from fairy realm to depletion-era Flores), not a rejection of bond.
The childhood familiar did not die in Ch 02\. The child watched a hunter skin an animal that looked similar. The familiar escaped. It has been surviving alone in the modern world for the entire game — vril-depleted, disoriented, and separated from the only vril-rich being on the planet.
The familiar's solo survival is canonically as hard as the protagonist's survival — possibly harder. The familiar has no human communities to pass through, no trade skills to develop, no healer to restore it. It survives on instinct and loyalty to a bond it has no reason to believe will ever be honored again.
Across Ch 02-57, the protagonist perceives the familiar's presence as background awareness — the recurring environmental clue that something with the familiar's vril signature has been nearby. The specific chapter-by-chapter presence pattern is owned by T1\_Threads\_22\_Master\_References Thread 1 Vril Parallels (childhood familiar vril-signature cross-chapter trace).
Per T1\_Story\_Spine Ch 58 Phase 6 cascade authoring: the protagonist exits the Antarctic underground facility onto the Antarctic ice after defeating the antagonist family Phase 3 (negative consciousness rift-control mechanism per T4\_House\_of\_Velheim\_Canonical). The familiar — who escaped the hunter in Ch 02 and has been surviving in the human world for the entire journey — is on the ice, 40 meters away.
The familiar's vril signature, which the protagonist has perceived as background awareness since Ch 02, is now clear and immediate and specific. The familiar is there. Older. Alone for 55 chapters. Waiting at the place that the Dreaming elder pointed toward at Ch 57 per T1\_Story\_Spine.
The reunion has no combat mechanic. It has no dialogue option.
The protagonist walks across the ice. The familiar walks across the ice. They meet in the middle. The healer's child, watching from the Vimana, closes their journal.
The reunion triggers playable flashback sequences — brief, vivid, first-person moments that the game remembers from the specific player's playthrough.
The flashbacks are technical: the game records specific player moments in Ch 01-02 and replays them at Ch 58 reunion. Implementation: per-player save-state flashback sequences with generalized fallback beats where player-specific moments were not recorded.
Per T0\_Hard\_Lines HL\_0058 path-variable resolution canon, the 22nd slot resolves differently per integrity band at Ch 58\.
L1 Truly Good. The childhood familiar rejoins as legendary companion at Ch 58 Antarctica reunion per §5.5 above. Slot occupied by the original Ch 1 species selection at full bond depth.
L2 Good Enough. The protagonist perceives the childhood familiar's presence at Ch 58 but the familiar does not come to the ice. The playable flashback sequences do not occur. The familiar gifts a binding stone at the encounter site — a vril-anchored item that the protagonist can carry forward into the path-variable 22nd slot. The binding stone serves as the slot-occupant on this path: the protagonist's chosen tameable creature per T3\_Creatures\_Tameable scope can be bonded to the binding stone, occupying the path-variable 22nd slot at canonical bond-depth-scale appropriate to the Good Enough path register. The childhood familiar continues solo presence in the mortal world; the bond persists at distance but does not produce reunion-form companionship.
L3 Drifting. Presence perceived; the encounter does not stabilize at either reunion or binding-stone-gift register. The path-variable 22nd slot remains unoccupied across the L3 path. No combat. No reunion. No binding stone gift.
L4 Evil and L5 Pure Evil terminal. The childhood familiar fights the protagonist at Ch 58\. Defeating the familiar in combat produces a binding stone item per HL\_0058 canon — the binding stone on this path is gained through combat rather than gift. The binding stone serves as the slot-occupant: the protagonist's chosen tameable creature per T3\_Creatures\_Tameable scope can be bonded to the binding stone, occupying the path-variable 22nd slot at canonical Evil-path register. The cost of the Evil path is visible through the protagonist's most personal relationship — the binding stone carries the canonical signature of the combat that produced it.
The path-variable mechanic preserves slot-occupancy across paths while making the cost of each path canonically visible. The Truly Good path produces direct reunion; the Good Enough path produces binding-stone-gift with continuing solo presence; the Evil paths produce binding-stone-through-combat with the canonical cost.
At Ch 65 Antarctica Return, the childhood familiar (reunited Ch 58 on L1 Truly Good path) faces the canonical Familiar's Choice. The choice resolves at two options: return-to-fairy-realm with the protagonist (the familiar returns to native habitat; the bond persists but the familiar's mortal-world presence ends), or remain-in-human-world (the familiar remains as continuing-presence in the mortal world; the bond persists at fairy-realm-distance signature; the familiar becomes long-lived steward of mortal-world vril-pockets the protagonist established Ch 39-58).
The choice is the familiar's own — the protagonist does not select. Choice mechanic: the protagonist's accumulated relationship-history with the familiar across Ch 01 plus Ch 58 plus Ch 59-65 determines the familiar's choice via species-canonical preferences plus accumulated trust state.
L1 Truly Good path only. The Familiar's Choice arc does not surface on L2 Good Enough (which has binding-stone-gift only at Ch 58 per §5.8), L3 Drifting (which has trace presence only), or L4-L5 Evil paths (which have binding-stone-through-combat only at Ch 58).
The Familiar's Choice arc determines Ch 70-77 childhood familiar presence. Returns-to-realm variant produces fairy-realm reunion at Ch 70-plus arc. Remains-in-human-world variant produces healer's-child final-journal-entry mortal-world stewardship reference at Ch 75 Arc 3 per T1\_Story\_Spine.
The legendary familiar reunion at Ch 58 on L1 Truly Good path is the emotional climax of the entire familiar system. Sixty chapters of grief resolved not through resurrection but through the recognition that what was lost was never lost — it was surviving separately, carrying the same loss, finding its way back.
This is the game's central argument about loss made personal: things that matter survive.
The childhood familiar is the bridge between the Ch 01 fairy realm bond and the Ch 70-77 finale arc. Her presence at Ch 58 is the structural hinge of the modern-world-return-home arc — after Ch 58, the path home is revealed (the quantum rift the antagonist family had been holding open for their own purposes, which the protagonist will walk through per T1\_Story\_Spine Ch 59-77).
Childhood familiar content is subject to the Ch 76-77 Grand Sage hard-lock discipline per CVD §17.9.
Josh RULED 2026-07-30, the twenty-ninth sitting; docs/spine/DECISIONS\_PENDING\_JOSH.md carries the six verbatims and is the authority. Everything in §5.1 through §5.10 above describes the FIRST PLAYTHROUGH and is untouched by this section. New Game Plus runs the same childhood, the same fall, and the same separation, and then diverges at four points: when the legendary power item arrives, what the late-game reunion asks of the player, what the post-game Epilogue opens, and what the Personal Dimension brings across.
The bond re-forms by play; it is not carried state. The Chapter 1 forest quest of §5.2 runs again in New Game Plus and the same measure decides it — the one of the twelve the player plays with most is the one that bonds. A player who plays differently bonds differently. Nothing about the childhood bond is inherited across the boundary as a saved value, which is what makes a second Chapter 1 worth playing rather than worth skipping.
The legendary power item arrives at the separation, not at the reunion. In the base game the item reaches the player late, per the fifteenth-sitting three-path resolution — dropped on the challenge fight's defeat on the truly-evil path, or left behind and departed from on the in-between path. In New Game Plus the familiar LEAVES THE ITEM BEHIND at the separation after the rift fall, so the player carries it across nearly the whole run instead of receiving it at the end.
The item's properties, as this sitting extends them. The fifteenth-sitting record stands exactly as written and nothing in it is withdrawn: the item equips on any earthly familiar and upgrades that familiar to LEGENDARY status like the fairy-realm familiar, and it is a unique story-sourced vector that is NEVER a general rarity-gate bypass — the broader LEGENDARY and MYTHIC rarity access stays gated by the final mastery questline. This sitting ADDS two properties to that same item, recorded here as an extension rather than a rewrite.
The New Game Plus late-game reunion is universal, and the vector is the item's return. The three-path integrity fork of §5.8 governs the first playthrough only. In New Game Plus the reunion is available at ANY integrity level, and the thing that makes it a reunion is GIVING THE ITEM BACK — returning to the familiar the legendary power item it left behind at the separation. Integrity does not gate it and no band is excluded.
The post-game Epilogue opens the fairy realm and all twelve familiars. At the New Game Plus post-Epilogue the player may REVISIT the fairy realm in whatever state their own playthrough left it — the realm's end-state persists per what the player did, and the revisit reads that state rather than a fixed postcard. All twelve fairy-realm familiars are TAMEABLE there.
THE TWO AXES ARE SEPARATE, and the separation is the ruling. The TAMED-CREATURE axis and the BONDED-FAMILIAR axis cross the New Game Plus boundary differently, and Josh drew the line himself: the carried roster does not include familiars, because familiars have bonding questlines.
What this section does NOT settle, recorded so no later pass mistakes silence for canon.
The player travels with three active familiars at any time — one per slot Ground / Flying / Water — plus the path-variable 22nd slot operating outside the rotation when active per §1.2. Familiars can be swapped between active and resting state at trade compound home bases, fairy-realm-adjacent vril-dense locations, and specific rest points per chapter.
Rotation preserves bond level — a familiar placed at rest does not lose progress. Rotation does not equal abandonment. Abandonment per §1.8 is a specific pattern of sustained neglect that the path-variable 22nd slot familiar perceives at Ch 58 reunion.
Shell W1 is the exception: as sustained-bond, Shell is always present when the Water slot is active. The other six Water familiars rotate around Shell's always-present base.
The Ch 39-65 modern-era arc includes adult revisits to regions the protagonist visited in the ancient-world arc. Familiar reappearance at revisit chapters follows canonical pattern.
Direct recognition. If the familiar is individual-lifespan-capable of surviving from ancient arc to modern arc (Muthu as Sri Lankan elephant with 60-70 year lifespan canonical; Kasa as green sea turtle with 80-plus year lifespan canonical; Shell as softshell turtle with multi-century species-lineage recognition; Bowhead W7 as the unique 200-plus year individual canonical to species), the familiar directly recognizes the protagonist at modern revisit. This is the strongest reappearance canon.
Descendant recognition. If the familiar's individual lifespan cannot bridge ancient-to-modern, a descendant or species-community-member recognizes the protagonist (Kira's multi-generational bird memory; Khan's modern Sumatran tiger descendant; Desta's modern Ethiopian wolf descendant). This pattern is narratively supported even where not biologically canonical.
Extinction-risk acknowledgment. Where the real-world species is at extinction risk (Kira, Khan, Desta, Bowhead Whale), the Ch 59/Ch 60 plus Ch 56 revisit content includes memorial or conservation-outcome variance depending on real-world timeline at launch per CVD §6 substrate-acknowledgment register.

Three of the 22 named familiars carry canonical evolution arcs that transform them beyond their base species form.
Koi W3 → Dragon. At max bond plus Magister Templi Animal Communication Mastery, the Koi transforms into Dragon form per Chinese Koi-Dragon Gate tradition. The Dragon form converges Thread 2 Serpent (dragon-as-serpent-continuity) with Thread 6 Dying-Rising (transformation through trial). Gameplay implementation: Koi Dragon form extends water-slot capacity to include aerial plus elemental capabilities (dragons are cross-domain in Chinese cosmology per CVD §3 cultural substrate).
Kasa W5 → Cosmic Turtle. At max bond plus specific questline, Kasa transforms into Cosmic Turtle (planetary scale) per Turtle Island planetary-carrier archetype. Cosmic Turtle form extends Kasa's navigational ability to trans-oceanic / planetary scale and grants the protagonist turtle-mythological planetary-carrier perception at Ch 38 Azores midpoint and cross-cultural Turtle Island synthesis at Ch 76-77 (Ch 76-77 Grand Sage hard-lock discipline applies; content surfaces only at the Grand Sage reveal per CVD §17.9).
Raven F6 → Huginn-Muninn pair. At max bond, Raven evolves into a pair of ravens — Huginn ("Thought") and Muninn ("Memory") per Odinic tradition. Pair form grants both forward reconnaissance (Huginn) and recall of past encounters including enemy weaknesses observed in prior chapters (Muninn). Unique among the 22-slot architecture as the only familiar that evolves into two entities.
All 22 familiars exhibit integrity-band-driven evolution per §1.7 plus §1.4 Pillar 12 Layer 3 fauna behavior substrate.
L1 Truly Good plus L2 Good Enough. Radiant / light-aspected forms. Examples: Shell's carapace glows with pre-depletion vril at highest-integrity band; Paravani's tail eyespots shift to spectrum-anomaly patterns reading at multiple wavelengths; Muthu's cultural significance aura (Buddhist plus Hindu) registers visibly in vril sight.
L3 Drifting. Balanced forms retain species baseline appearance and behavior.
L4 Evil plus L5 Pure Evil terminal. Shadow / corrosive-aspected forms. Familiars exhibit stress-response patterns — coat darkening, vocalization pattern distortion, predator-behavior escalation beyond species norm. Cosmetic plus mechanical: L4-L5 familiars gain damage output at the cost of species-behavior authenticity.
Evolution is reversible along the integrity axis — a player who moves from L4-L5 back to L1-L3 sees their familiars' visible corrosion recede. The path-variable 22nd slot familiar's integrity-read at Ch 58 accounts for the full integrity-path-history of the player across 77 chapters — recovery from deep corrosion is visible to the 22nd slot familiar even where surface-state at Ch 58 is improved.
Specific familiars carry legendary bond quests distinct from the standard 22-slot progression.
Simurgh F4. Conference of the Birds Seven Valleys — the Attar framework as in-game questline. Each valley tests a Sufi mystical-tradition spiritual threshold (Search / Love / Knowledge / Detachment / Unity / Bewilderment / Annihilation). Completion at all seven earns Simurgh bond and the thirty-birds-discover-they-are-the-Simurgh moment — a structural parallel to the Ch 76-77 Grand Sage waterfall reveal that operates without disclosing the reveal per CVD §17.9 hard-lock discipline.
Bowhead Whale W7. Specific-questline-gated per §2 W7 entry. The 200-plus year lifespan bond grants access to the oldest-living-individual-witness perspective (the Ch 56 bowhead was alive during Ch 29 Sámi era — cross-chapter individual-memory bridge canonical).
Path-Variable 22nd Slot. The entire Ch 01 plus Ch 58 arc is the legendary bond quest. See §5.
The Beastiary catalogs all 22 named familiars encountered plus the 400-plus non-familiar tameable creature species across the world per T3\_Creatures\_Tameable scope under Trade 1 Animal Communication plus Trade 10 Fishing / Navigation operational scope. Each entry documents cultural significance, behavioral notes, habitat, and ecological role.
This doc owns the 22 named familiars (Beastiary entries for them). T3\_Creatures\_Tameable owns the 400-plus non-familiar species.
Variant encounters operate under T1\_RNG\_Sigma\_Constraint\_System discipline per CVD §17.13. Variant spawn rates bound to plus-or-minus 1 sigma of the canonical bell curve. Cannot drop before sigma \-1 (anti-streak floor); must drop after sigma \+1 (anti-streak ceiling); resets on drop. Rare variants apply to both the 22 named familiars and the 400-plus Beastiary species. Completionist tier requires documenting every variant in the Beastiary — multi-chapter across arc content.
This doc does not own.
